Cath Oss will be guest at January 10 Song & Story Swap

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the January Pioneer Valley Folklore Society SONG & STORY SWAP.

Come hear Cath Oss at the Black Sheep - Jan. 10, 2003Friday, January 10, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.

Highlighting the evening will be a guest performance by vocalist Cath Oss.  Cath moved to Western Massachusetts 12 years ago, and hit the musical ground running. She hooked up with the ground-breaking band Cordelia's Dad alongside Tim Eriksen and Peter Irvine, playing folk-rock and old American music, and with Northampton Harmony singing mainly 19th century harmony. She also pounced on the local Sacred Harp singings, as she says, "like a starving giraffe." Cath has taken advantage of these community shape note sings to continue developing her voice and repertoire, as well as hone her skills on the lap dulcimer and fiddle.  Her music tours have crossed the U.S., Canada and England and her harmonies may be heard on several Cordelia's Dad recordings, most recently the 2002 release, What It Is on the Kimchee label.

The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell, sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or story.  Listeners are welcome, too.  Admission is free, with donations accepted.

The warm-up theme this month is My Favorite Things. Theme -- My Favorite Things

The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of every month.  For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.

Sacred Harp singing in Western Mass.

Western Massachusetts Sacred Harp ConventionThe use of varying shapes to represent the different notes of the musical scale evolved as a music teaching technique in the early 1800s.  Shape note singing as it became known was given a boost when B. F. White published his Sacred Harp anthology of hymns presented in the shape note style.

Today the Sacred Harp serves as the centerpiece for community sings and festivals throughout the English-speaking world.  Western Massachusetts hosts an annual Sacred Harp convention as well as regular sings in Northampton, Amherst, Greenfield and Leyden.

The Western Mass. Sacred Harp Convention web site at http://wmshc.org is a great resource for those interested in learning more about shape note singing opportunities in the area.

New schedule and lineup for Stone Soup Café

Bob Blue's Stone Soup CafeIf you haven't yet made it down to one of the weekly concerts in Bob Blue's living room, then you've been missing out.  Twenty folks squeezed in to hear Lui Collins last month, and Bob's 2003 lineup doesn't miss a beat.  Catie Curtis, Sally Rogers and Bill Staines are among the impressive roster of performers scheduled to appear in coming months.

In an effort to avoid competing with other local gigs, many of this year's events are being held on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:00 p.m.  See Bob's web site at http://www.bobblue.org for the latest schedule.

Lou's Reviews – Two CDs from the Silk Road Project

The Silk Road: A Musical CaravanLou Wigdor's wandering ear has lead him to savor the sounds emanating from the Silk Road, the ancient trade route connecting Asia and Europe.  He has focused on two works by the Silk Road Project, a cross-cultural collaboration founded by Yo-Yo Ma and under the curatorship of Amherst College alumnus and former PVFS member, Ted Levin.
