Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society Song & Story Swap.

Sunday, March 11 , 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst, Mass (see map). Note that March 11 is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time!

Terry Kitchen will be guest artist at the March 11 Song & Story Swap at the Nacul Center in AmherstGuest performer for the March 11 song & story swap will be award-winning contemporary folk singer/songwriter Terry Kitchen.

As much storyteller as musician, Terry Kitchen's keen eye for detail, fearless emotional honesty, and knowledge of and empathy for his subjects combine with his skills as a composer, singer and guitarist to take the listener on a journey to the heart of each song.

His songwriting has earned him widespread honors. He was a finalist in the 1992 Falcon Ridge songwriter showcase (and a featured performer ever since), a '94 Telluride Troubadour, a finalist in the 2003 South Florida Folk Festival's singer/songwriter showcase and a Top 40 finalist in the 2006 Kerrville Music to Life competition. His songs have won Grand Prize in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, First Prize in the USA Songwriting Competition, and a Runner Up in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Terry Kitchen recently released his eighth solo CD, Heaven Here On Earth.

Lighthearted Songs and Music Games on March 18

Sol Weber, Sol Weber and Sol WeberSong & Story Swap host Paul Kaplan is teaming up with New York folk artist and round aficionado, Sol Weber for a March 18 collaboration called Lighthearted Songs and Music Games.

Paul Kaplan has demonstrated his mastery of the parody form with classic songs such as "Henry the Accountant" and "Call Me the Whale." Sol Weber possesses a scholar's knowledge of musical games, as exhibited in his massive anthology, Rounds Galore.

The show takes place at the Munson Library in South Amherst, on March 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Saving Valley Folk

The movement to restore Valley Folk to the WFCR Radio schedule continues. The long-running folk music show was abruptly canceled in January along with Celtic and African music programs and a Spanish-language talk show. WFCR management's rationale was that they are seeking "consistency" in the station's programming and consequently are restricting its focus to classical music and jazz.

The Coalition to Democratize WFCR is promoting a grassroots campaign exhorting the station to accept guidance from a Community Advisory Board as mandated by federal laws governing public radio stations, to place higher importance on locally-produced shows and to strive for greater diversity in its programming. Visit the group's web site at http://www.justiceandpeace.net/WFCRdemocracy to learn more or get involved.

WFCR (88.5 FM) begins its spring fund drive on Thursday, March 8. If you care about restoring Valley Folk or offering input into the station's programming decisions, this could represent an opportunity to get station management's ear.
