Chris Pahud will join March 12 Song & Story Swap

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the March Pioneer Valley Folklore Society SONG & STORY SWAP.

Chris Pahud at the Black Sheep in Amherst, March 12Friday, March 12, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.

Chris Pahud, a folksinger from Quincy, Mass., will be guest performer at the March 12 Song & Story Swap. Chris Pahud's style has been described as “Rogerine” — heavily influenced by the music of Stan and Garnet Rogers (with Bob Dylan, Fred Neil and Tom Russell mixed in too). Possessing a strong baritone voice and skill on the 6- and 12-string guitars and the echo harp, he favors the songs of mariners, lovers, adventurers, farmers, fishermen, the sea, the hills and the shore.

Pahud has teamed up with bassist Phil Kissinger to record a self-produced CD entitled “Morton's Return.” This tandem has been described by Ken Batts of the Folkzone as “the manliest duo in folk.”

The warm-up theme this month is
Adventure. The theme is "Adventure"

Folklorist John Cohen featured at Hampshire College

New Lost City Ramblers, photo by David Gahr

His name may not be famous, but John Cohen has left his mark in the folk annals through an awe-inspiring array of projects.  In 1958 he joined Mike Seeger and Tom Paley to form the New Lost City Ramblers, a string band which helped usher in the folk music revival and re-popularize the traditional songs of Appalachia.  After his stint with the NLCR, Cohen went on to become an acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and professor of ethnomusicology.  He has also written numerous articles for Sing Out! Magazine and in 1961 co-founded the Friends of Old Time Music.

Hampshire College will be showcasing the many facets of John Cohen this week beginning  Sunday evening, March 7 with a concert by John Cohen & Friends at the Hampshire Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.  There will be a public talk on Monday, March 8 and three of John Cohen's films will be screened on Tuesday, March 9.  See the Hampshire College announcement for details.

Clean Living Reunion on April 4

Clean Living Reunion -- April 4 at College Church, NorthamptonBack in the early seventies the Western Mass. country-rock band, Clean Living gained widespread popularity and a Vanguard recording contract.  Bob Lapalm, Tim Griffin, Paul Lambert, Frank Shaw, Rick Tiven, Tex Lamountain and Norman Schell were among the talented band members whom critics took to comparing with contemporaries the Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

On Sunday, April 4, a Clean Living "family-style" reunion concert will be held at the College Church, 48 Pomeroy Terrace, Northampton.  The event is a benefit for Paul Lambert, the band's pedal steel guitar and dobro player, who has been diagnosed with cancer.  The concert will include performances by Norman Schell & Youth Well Spent, Frank Shaw and Family, and Pat and Tex Lamountain.  It starts at 4:00 p.m.
